HAVE A HEART

Dinner, dancing, delight

74 Sweethearts celebrated at American Heart Association’s Heart Ball

The theme for the 2018 Heart Ball for the American Heart Association was "Ignite Power" -- and powerful it was.

The evening, held March 10 at the Statehouse Convention Center, included a powerful video interview of event chairman Doris Washington and her daughters Stephanie and Sydnie. Washington agreed to chair the event with her husband, Oscar Washington. He died of a heart attack in the spring of 2017 before the couple could chair the event.

Doris Washington was joined at the event by her daughters and her mother-in-law Alma Washington.

The evening started with a cocktail reception and silent auction. Dinner began with a charcuterie plate featuring an assortment of cheeses and buffalo sausage. The main course included root beer braised short ribs and saltimbocca chicken.

Before dinner, the 74 Heart Ball Sweethearts were escorted to the stage by their fathers and individually introduced. A live auction followed dinner that included an African safari, a vacation in Tuscany and a week in Costa Rica.

Honorees and award winners were Bylites Incorporated, Byl Harriell, Dennis McKelvey and Dr. James Marsh. Donna Terrell served as master of ceremonies. The night ended with dancing to the band Dizzy 7.
