'Cutting Edge'

"Cutting Edge," an exhibit featuring paper dresses from the 1960s that could be hemmed and altered with a pair of scissors and repaired with a piece of tape, goes on display today at ESSE Purse Museum, 1510 Main St., Little Rock. In conjunction, mixed-media artist Laura Fanning's "Caution: Garment May Be Flammable" collection of paper clothing -- to be hung on the wall, not the body -- will also be on display, and for sale.

The exhibit will remain up through May 20. Admission is $10, $8 for senior citizens 60 and older, military and children 5-18, free for children under 5.

Fanning will hold a workshop, 1-3 p.m. May 19, at which participants will make their own paper "clothes or collages." Cost, $30, includes materials; there are 20 spots available. For reservations and more information, call (501) 916-9022.

WEDNESDAY

Mixed masonry

Holly Hope, special projects historian at the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, presents: "A Storm Couldn't Tear Them Down: The Mixed Masonry Buildings of Silas Owens Sr., 1938-1955" for the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies' monthly "Legacies & Lunch" program, noon-1 p.m. Wednesday in the Darragh Center, Central Arkansas Library System Main Library, 100 Rock St., Little Rock. Owens, from Twin Groves, was a farmer and self-taught rock mason who most notably produced cut-stone buildings trimmed with brick, in what the Preservation Program dubs "mixed masonry." Admission is free. Visit butlercenter.org.
