Sherwood town halls set on tax plan

Town-hall meetings are scheduled in Sherwood to provide residents with information about the June 19 special election when city voters will be asked to approve a two-part city sales tax increase.

The meetings scheduled will be 6 p.m. Thursday for Ward 1 at Sylvan Hills Community Church, 8019 Arkansas 107; 6 p.m. May 21 for Ward 4 at The Ridge Church, 8013 Jacksonville Cato Road, and a citywide meeting at 6 p.m. June 7 at Sylvan Hills First Baptist Church, 9008 Arkansas 107.

The three-quarters percent tax is sought to support a bond issuance of $38.5 million for improvements to city streets and drainage systems. The tax would expire once the bond debt is paid off in an estimated seven to 10 years, city officials have said.

A separate vote for a one-quarter percent tax would be permanent. This tax revenue would go into the city's general fund for operations, which includes public safety and other services.
