Work to widen U.S. 70 to disrupt traffic

Work on a $78.5 million project to widen U.S. 70 between Benton and Hot Springs will require a series of overnight rolling lane closures and traffic shifts for five nights beginning Monday, the Arkansas Department of Transportation said.

Crews will mill rumble strips in the pavement along the shoulders and on either side of the continuous left-turn lane from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day through Saturday, weather permitting.

When the center turn lane is being milled, vehicles traveling in the same direction as the milling machine will be stopped for short periods and then released to go around the pavement work, the department said. When the shoulders are being milled, traffic will be shifted to inside lanes around the operations.

The work will occur along the length of the widening project area. Motorists should consider alternate routes during the work period, including using U.S. 270, the department said.
