MOUNTAIN HOME -- A cat on top of a telephone pole in front of a dentist's office here was the center of attraction for several hours. Late yesterday evening she took to the pole in an effort to get away from a dog. Once up, she was afraid to come down and sat on the cross arms mewing. The pole was very slippery and high, and while the deep sympathy of many onlookers were expressed for her uncomfortable position, no one volunteered to hazard the climb until Vinn Tipton, a little redheaded boy, came along. With barefeet glued to the pole, he hunched his way up with the aid of his knees and brought her down.

FORT SMITH -- A Kansas man pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to one of two counts charging him with trying to contact a 14-year-old Fort Smith girl through cell phone text messaging to have sex. Timothy Whittenburg, 43, of Ellinwood, Kan., entered the plea before U.S. District Judge Robert Dawson to a felony charge of coercion or enticement of a minor. Whittenburg's plea was part of an agreement with the government under which another charge, traveling in interstate commerce with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, would be dismissed.
