HEROES HONORED

Humanitarian efforts awarded by JCA at gala

Just Communities of Arkansas honored four Arkansans for their humanitarian efforts at a May 8 gala in the Jack Stephens Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

The JCA 2018 Humanitarian Award honorees are:

• Rhonda Aaron, founder and president of Sister Friends United which supports and empowers women by providing services ranging from scholarships to hunger relief.

• Dr. Glenn Anderson, a member of the National Black Deaf Advocates board of directors and author of Still I Rise: The Enduring Legacy of Black Deaf Arkansans Before and After Integration.

• Sherman Tate, a trailblazer of the integration of Arkansas businesses and mentor to many black boys.

• Robert E. Johnston, a posthumous award for his lifetime of public service and commitment to social justice, especially on behalf of the homeless. Johnston died in September.

Lottie Shackelford and Mica Strother served as co-chairmen of the event.
