• Bruce Bennett, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor, said Sunday night that Governor Rockefeller's release of a State Police prison investigation report was aimed at intimidating the legislature into passing a $1.8 million prison appropriation. The report into the unearthing of three skeletons at Cummins Prison Farm on January 29 was released by the governor late Saturday. A special session of the legislature will convene today. The report concluded that the skeletons were removed from an old prison graveyard that had been used until the 1940s. It also concluded that two of the three skeletons were not those of slain inmates another convict claimed to have helped bury.

• Pulaski County grand jurors took a closer look Wednesday at a state prison site that was the focus of several investigations last month. Those cases involved alleged gang recruitment by former drill sergeant Rodney Spencer and the prison purchase of an irrigation system once belonging to state Rep. Lloyd George of Danville (Yell County). Jury foreman Anna Maria Tolley asked the boot camp administrator, Tonny Rochelle, about the proximity of the barracks to the laundry room and mental health facilities. Boot camp inmates were allegedly taken there in the middle of the night for gang recruitment activities.

• One has 11 rubber boots for feet and a bird made from recycled windshield wipers. One is made of steel drums brightly painted in firetruck red and canary yellow. Anyone driving on South Main Street between 12th and 17th streets likely has seen the large, ornate, somewhat odd looking chairs on the sidewalks. People who live, work and shop in the area sure have noticed. "I just love the spontaneity of it," said Tish McClure as she waited in line at Community Bakery. "They're whimsical and fun. They just kind of add an unexpected brightness to your day." The chairs are part of Southside Main Street's public art project "Places, Spaces, Chairs."
