Also National Youth Week, which is recognized by the Elks in the first week of May, was celebrated. There was a special presentation to the Boy Scouts and to the Students of the Year at Prairie Grove Middle School. Lioneld Jordan, mayor of Fayetteville, signed and read the proclamation for Youth Week. He also cut the cake for the celebration.

Whirlaways

The Ark-Oma Whirlaways Square Dance Club will dance at 7:30 p.m. June 1 to Bob Loyd, and June 15 Jay Wright will be calling. The club dances at the Springdale Senior Center, 203 Park St. in Springdale. There will be mainstream and plus levels with banners given to visiting clubs.

Book Forum

Omni Climate Book Forum will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. June 3 at the Fayetteville Public Library. Alberto Torres will finish his presentation on Climate Refugees and Gladys Tiffany will present "Global Climate Refugees, the Context for Fayetteville's Food Plan." The plan was developed by the University of Arkansas Community Design Center, directed by Dr. Steve Luoni and is available online. It is a revisioning of how a city can work together to feed its people on a warming planet.

Garden Club

The Garden Club of Rogers will meet at 10:30 a.m. June 5 at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner of New Hope Road and 26th Street.

The speaker will be Sherrie Smith with a PowerPoint presentation on plant triage. Smith has a plant pathology degree from the University of Arkansas, has worked for the National Park Service and was Missouri Nurseryman for eight years. She is a plant diagnostician for the state of Arkansas. Under her role as an instructor she provides training to county extension agents. Smith takes her portable diagnostic lab to flower shows, garden shows, field days and other special events.

There will be pass-along plants and magazines, horticulture report and drawing for plant of the month. Lunch will be served by Susan's Catering. Reservations are required.

Environmental

Kat Hoenke, spatial ecologist with the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership, will speak on the power of GIS mapping in identifying and prioritizing for removal obsolete dams and low water crossings. She will speak at the Ozark Environmental Conversation from 6 to 8 p.m. June 6 at the Arvest Conference Center, North Main Street and Legion Lane in Bentonville.

Also on the panel are David Gould, director of the Plymouth Massachusetts Department of Marine and Environmental Affairs, and Raven Lawson, Watershed Protection manager with Central Arkansas Water. Ozark Environmental Conversations are organized by the Friends of Little Sugar Creek and the Ozark Society Sugar Creek Chapter with support from Patagonia. The public is welcome.

Hill Hikers

All walkers are invited to a fairly flat 5K or sometimes hilly 10K paved walk with the Ozark Hill Hikers, affiliated with the American Volkssport Association, beginning at 9:30 a.m. June 9 in Fayetteville. Meet at Walgreens, 524 S. School Ave. in Fayetteville between 9 and 9:30 a.m.

Cancer Support

This supportive and educational group is for adult patients, caregivers, families and friends coping with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, MDS or other blood cancers. The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 11 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale.

This support group is offered to anyone with an ostomy, preparing for an ostomy or caring for someone with an ostomy. It meets from 2 to 4 p.m. June 17 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale.

Photographers

The Bella Vista/Bentonville Photography Club met May 15 for their monthly meeting. Doug Keck, president, presented the program on camera settings for night photography that included information for photographing lightning and the Milky Way.

This month's photo contest category was "Blooming Spring." Natalie Roller's entry won first place, Jean Berg took second and Grace Nowack placed third.

Members enjoyed a club outing May 17 at Lake Ann in Bella Vista where they practiced water photography using slow shutter speeds.

June's contest category is "Beat the Heat" using water photography. The June meeting will be held at 6 p.m. June 19 at the Hometown Bank in Jane, Mo.

Music Club

The Andante Music Club invites the public to a free presentation of "A Taste of the Opera" at 1 p.m. June 5 at the Highland Christian Church, 1500 Forest Hills Blvd in Bella Vista.

Cast members of Opera in the Ozarks will present arias introducing their 2018 season. Music selections will include songs from "Die Fledermaus," "The Barber of Seville" and "The Ballad of Baby Doe."

Opera in the Ozarks season begins Friday, June 22. Refreshments will be served after the performance.

Garden Club

The Bella Vista Garden Club will host the 2018 Garden Party from 4 to 8 p.m. June 8 at Simple Pleasures, 13718 Rothbury Drive in Bella Vista.

This event is held in cooperation with the city of Bella Vista and the Bella Vista POA and will feature local artists, music, delicious appetizers, wine, raffles, a silent auction and much more.

Tickets may be purchased for $15 at POA Member Services, Bella Vista Arvest Bank locations, Audrey's Resale Boutique, and from Garden Club Members.
