ONLY GOD CAN MAKE A TREE

'Trees' on display after lobby party

Hot Springs artist Linda Williams Palmer never got over her childhood fascination with trees. As an adult, she photographed, then drew the state's largest trees of their species, those registered with the Arkansas Forestry Commission as "champions." The colored-pencil drawings went on to become an exhibit whose latest stop is at the University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College.

An opening reception for "Champion Trees of Arkansas" took place May 18 in the Windgate Gallery and in the lobby of the Center for Humanities and Arts.

Before the reception, the AETN-TV documentary Champion Trees was shown in the center's Charts Theater. Guests -- which included a "delegation" of Palmer's friends and fellow Spa City residents -- then nibbled hearty hors d'oeuvres and drinks as they chatted, admired the drawings and enjoyed the musical sounds of Barry McVinney and Julia Buckingham. Palmer made a short speech before autographing copies of her book, Champion Trees of Arkansas: An Artist's Journey. Published by the University of Arkansas Press and released in 2016, the hardcover book is $34.95.
