Hempstead County extends date for time-capsule letters

The Hempstead County Bicentennial Time Capsule deadline has been extended to Dec. 15.

"Residents still have time to put their own 'letter to the future' for the Hempstead County Bicentennial Time Capsule," spokesman Josh Williams said.

Organizers are putting together an event to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the formation of Hempstead County, which is in the southwest part of Arkansas.

Hempstead County was organized in 1818, before Congress established the Arkansas Territory, according to The Arkansas Encyclopedia of History and Culture.

It has been home to a number of notables, including President Bill Clinton, who was born in Hope. Four Arkansas governors were from Hempstead County: Clinton, Mike Huckabee, Daniel Webster Jones and Augustus H. Garland.

The bicentennial committee is offering an opportunity for residents to send a one-page "letter to the future" on a provided form, Williams said.

"The letters will be placed in the time capsule for future generations to see 50 years from now in 2068 and look back on what Hempstead County life was like in the year 2018," Williams said.

He added that people and organizations can write about anything they want people in 2068 to know. All of the letters will be microfilmed by the state archives and then placed in the time capsule, Williams said.

The standard letter form can be downloaded online at www.Hempstead200.com or picked up at the Hope-Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce, 101 W. 2nd St. in Hope.

"Each community in the county is also being asked to donate some artifacts or items representing their communities that will also go in the time capsule. Contact your local mayor for more information," Williams said.

More information is available from Williams at (870) 703-8256.
