Area lakes to receive trout

Rainbow Trout will be stocked at four Northwest Arkansas urban lakes for fall and winter fishing.

Melissa Jones, cold-water fisheries coordinator with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said trout will be stocked at Lake Atalanta in Rogers, Murphy Park pond in Springdale, Lake Springdale and Lake Bentonville.

The four lakes will be stocked by Thanksgiving, she said.

Lake Atalanta will receive 1,150 trout. Lake Springdale will get 750 trout. Murphy Park and Lake Bentonville will each be stocked with 360 trout. Fish average about 12 inches long, Jones said.

The four lakes, and other urban lakes around the state, will be restocked with trout about once a month through February. Trout are stocked when lakes turn cold because they can't survive in water much warmer than 70 degrees.

In December, 10 tagged trout will be released at Murphy Park, Lake Springdale and Lake Bentonville. Anglers catching a tagged fish may report the tag to Game and Fish by following instructions on the tag. They'll receive a prize of fishing tackle and be entered into a drawing for a grand prize. The grand prize hasn't been determined yet, Jones said.

The daily limit is five trout of any size. Anglers 16 and older must have an Arkansas fishing license and trout permit.
