A CUT ABOVE

Diamonds in the rough: 6 chefs compete for title

And then there were six. Six chefs made the final cut for a chance to compete for the title of Diamond Chef Arkansas in April. Ten chefs -- chosen by the public in a social media video campaign -- prepared small bites to be judged by several executive chefs and guests invited to Makin' the Cut on Nov. 12 at the University of Arkansas Pulaski Technical College Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Institute.

Guests were given six (fake) diamonds -- each worth a vote -- as they arrived. After a chance to meet the chefs and taste the gourmet bites -- which ranged from Pork Belly Burnt End Tacos to Portuguese Octopus -- votes were cast. Two tables, each with centerpieces made of cooking and serving utensils, held a chef hat for each of the 10 contestants and guests placed diamonds in the hats of six of their favorite chefs.

Going on to compete in April at Diamond Chef Arkansas will be Brandon Douglas of Green Leaf Grill, Izaak Winter of Yaya's Euro Bistro, Jordan Davis of Chenal Country Club, Amanda Ivy of Sauced, Jamie McAfee of Pine Bluff Country Club and Joe Coleman of the Little Rock Marriott.
