MEET ME AT THE FAIR

Cupcake cook-off benefits Carelink

For anyone with a sweet tooth, the fourth annual (and growing) Cupcakes for Goodness Sake was the event to attend. With "State Fair!" as the theme, the cupcake-creation contest and signature benefit for Carelink took place Oct. 6 on the 400 block of Main Street in North Little Rock's Argenta District.

A total of 16 baking professionals and amateurs competed for bragging rights, serving guests/voters sample-size, fair-theme cupcakes. The sunny late afternoon-early evening event brought out about 600 attendees, including a healthy number of parents, children/grandchildren and their pets. They also shopped local vendors, took advantage of a craft beer stand and food trucks, and jammed to the music of The Rodney Block Collective and singer Bijoux.

The winning professional cupcake maker was Cathead's Diner, featuring noted pastry chef Kelli Marks and serving up Cotton Candy and Deep Fried cupcakes. Capturing the amateur title for the second year in a row was teenage baker Sydney Fleming of Such Sweet Treats, who offered Blue Ribbon Peach Pie, Lemonade and Fried Red Velvet Cheesecake cupcakes. The winners won cash prizes of $750 each.

Carelink serves Central Arkansas' older population and their families. Proceeds of about $47,000 will go to the agency's general fund for Meals on Wheels and other services.
