The big five-o

Some actors play iconic roles for a long time. Reasons vary from fans to money. But it's difficult to imagine playing the same character for half a century. And yet, that's exactly what Caroll Spinney did. Not familiar with that name? You're definitely familiar with his role, a large yellow bird that educated you and, depending on your age, maybe your parents.

Spinney told The New York Times playing Big Bird on Sesame Street was one of the most joyous things in his life. He started playing the character in 1969, along with another popular character, Oscar the Grouch. And with the show approaching its own 50th anniversary, Spinney seems to think this is a good time to wind things down.

It's not just his dedication to a role, but Spinney dedicated himself to educating kids across the world. How many millions of children have watched Big Bird teach a multitude of subjects as Sesame Street was translated and taken to different countries? There's no way of knowing. His impact over a 50-year career is immeasurable. Even if you just focus on Arkansas, AETN went on the air in 1966, and little Arkies have been watching Big Bird since the show's debut.

Thanks for your dedication to these characters, Mr. Spinney. Godspeed, and we hope you enjoy retirement. You've more than earned it.
