UCA to host women writers conference

CONWAY -- Authors Allison Joseph and Megan Mayhew Bergman will speak at the C.D. Wright Women Writers Conference at the University of Central Arkansas next month.

Joseph, whose books of poetry include Confessions of a Barefaced Woman and Corporal Muse, will speak at the conference's opening at 6 p.m. Nov. 9 at the College of Business auditorium.

Bergman, author of the short-story collections Almost Famous Women and Birds of a Lesser Paradise, will speak at a Nov. 10 luncheon at 12:15 p.m. in the ballroom of McCastlain Hall. Bergman also writes for The Paris Review and contributes literary criticism to The Washington Post and The New York Times.

"Given the success of last year's conference, when over 190 writers gathered, we are thrilled to be hosting this important meeting again at UCA," Sandy Longhorn, conference director and assistant professor of creative writing, said in a news release last week.

Nov. 10 events also include a book fair and sessions featuring talks on the writing craft, readings and other information for women writers.

Two pre-conference workshops are set for the afternoon of Nov. 9. Monda Strange Fason, a writer and teacher from Conway, will lead "Diving into the Wreck: #MeToo and the Power of Telling." Writer Amy Letter of Drake University will lead "Comics 101."

Conference registration is $100 or $135 for the conference and one workshop.

The conference is named in honor of poet C.D. Wright, who was born in Mountain Home and who published more than a dozen books before she died in 2016.

Further information is available by calling Longhorn at UCA, at (501) 450-5108 or emailing cdwrightconference@gmail.com.
