Attacked with machete after being accused of 'messing with' man's mom, North Little Rock resident tells police

A man accused a North Little Rock resident of "messing with" his mother and attacked him with a machete Saturday morning, authorities said.

Edward Smith, 69, was cut three times with the weapon while visiting a friend at her home in the 3800 block of Crutcher Street in North Little Rock, according to a report from the city's Police Department.

Officers wrote that Smith had a cut on his back, a cut on the side of his neck and a deep cut into the tendons of his left wrist that a specialist will need to treat.

The altercation started about 11:45 a.m. when the woman's son entered the house and told Smith he had five minutes to leave, the report states. The victim told authorities the assailant then grabbed a machete out of his truck and started swinging.

Smith blocked the first blow with a chair and continued to back away from his attacker, police said.

The woman's son said, "If you are messing with my mom, then you are messing with me" before leaving the residence, according to the report.

No suspect had been named.
