Police: Boy, 5, dies from gunshot wound in Little Rock

A 5-year-old died from a gunshot wound in Little Rock on Saturday night, authorities said.

Little Rock police spokesman Lt. Michael Ford said officers were called at approximately 8 p.m. to 5207 Wycliffe Drive in southwest Little Rock, where a 5-year-old boy had been shot. Ford later confirmed that the child died.

How the child was shot and the manner of death have not yet been released.

On Wycliffe Drive, a crowd of people stood in the rain watching officers and detectives move in and out of a two-story brick house. Under the cover of an umbrella, a woman hugged a crying little boy.

Rodney Barefield, a former neighbor and close friend of the family, said the 5-year-old was one of five boys in the family. Barefield said the boys' mother called him just after 8 p.m. and said her son had accidentally shot himself.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
