• "How soon are you going to get married again, Sam?" the recording clerk asked Sam Steele, negro, of North Little Rock in Chancery Court yesterday morning. Sam obviously was dressed in wedding finery. "Lady, as soon as I can get down stairs and get the papers," he answered. Chancellor John E. Martinean has been out of the city and some negroes had to wait nearly a month before securing their divorce decrees. Five negroes, who were divorced yesterday, applied for marriage licenses at once.

FAYETTEVILLE -- As 41,000 persons crowded into Razorback Stadium here Saturday to see the University of Arkansas and Tulsa University play football, eight whites and two Negroes picketed the game and handed out leaflets objecting to the absence of Negro players on the Razorback squad. "We Want Razorblacks," read one sign. "Back Black Razorbacks," read another. Four persons handed out leaflets on the east side of the Stadium where the University students sit. "The University of Arkansas is fostering racial injustice through its football team," the blue and yellow leaflets read. "The Arkansas population is one-sixth black, yet not one Negro is on the Razorback football team." The leaflets then asked: "Why can't Negro citizens play ball for the Razorbacks? Why can't Arkansas blacks get athletic scholarships in football? Where is Frank Broyles when black talent leaves this state? When will social injustice end at the University of Arkansas?"

Authorities reported no injuries. The fire started about 1:15 a.m. and destroyed three buildings and damaged two others -- all owned by One Source Home and Building Centers -- along Main Street between East Sixth and Seventh streets. Authorities had no monetary estimate of structural damage. It took firefighters about three hours to put out the fire. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Tuesday, District Chief Wesley Springer said.

• A flock of nearly 150 birds collided with a regional jet taking off Sept. 21 from Little Rock National Airport, Adams Field, which airport officials say underscores the need of ongoing efforts to control the wildlife population on the airport's 22 acres. A Northwest Airlink flight to Detroit with 50 passengers and three crew members appeared to have been struck by at least 139 starlings on takeoff to the south from one of Little Rock National's two main commercial service runways, airport officials said. The crew contacted the airport control tower at 6:13 p.m. to report the strike. As a precaution, the pilots of the Bombardier CRJ-200 elected to return to the airport and, seven minutes later, landed without trouble.
