Halloween is a favorite time of year for many a ghoulish soul, and a handful of cable channels offer up a month-long slate of frights and delights. Food Network has really gotten into the groove over the years by adding more viewing choices. But instead of murder and mayhem, its programming showcases the cooking and baking side of the season.

The Halloween Baking Championship returned last week, and it airs at 8 p.m. Mondays. Comedian John Henson, along with judges Carla Hall, Lorraine Pascale and Zac Young, test the skills of eight bakers who compete for a $25,000 grand prize and a feature in Food Network Magazine. And at 9 p.m. Monday, highlights from past seasons will be showcased in Best of Halloween Baking Championship.

At 7 p.m. today, viewers can take a behind-the-scenes look at the weeks and months leading up to Halloween Wars, on The Road to Halloween Wars.

Jonathan Bennett returns to host Halloween Wars as six teams, each made up of an expert pumpkin carver, a cake artist and a sugar artist, battle it out over five episodes to create Halloween-theme edible displays. Award-winning cake decorator Shinmin Li and horror special effects master Todd Tucker, along with a rotating panel of celebrity guests, serve as judges to determine the team that will take home the $50,000 grand prize.

And at 9, Halloween Wars: Even More Monstrous Scares premieres. The show takes a look back at creations of past seasons featuring ghosts, witches, werewolves and yummy treats.

Next week will see two new shows:

• 9 p.m. Oct. 7, the Haunted Gingerbread Showdown premieres. Host Sandra Lee pits nine of the best gingerbread artists in the country against one another to create spooky masterpieces. The contestants will compete for a $25,000 prize, and they will be featured in Food Network Magazine.

• 9 p.m. Oct. 8, cake master Duff Goldman hosts Halloween Cake-Off, a competition where four professional bakers compete for a $10,000 grand prize.

And finally, 7 p.m. Oct. 15, Trisha's Halloween Spooktacular premieres. Host and country artist Trisha Yearwood throws a big party, and shares how she gets ready by trying on costumes, preparing her most elaborate dishes and checking out Nashville's most popular Halloween-theme bar.
