PREP TRACK REPORT Bentonville, Rogers team to win Border Clash

BENTONVILLE -- The annual Border Clash track meet is designed to have four Arkansas schools compete against four Missouri schools and allow them to battle for state bragging rights as well as team titles.

But when Friday's meet took place in Nixa, Mo., it turned out to be a 3-on-2 handicap match as far as schools were concerned. Bentonville High and Rogers High were there to represent Arkansas, while Missouri had Nixa, Kansas City Ruskin and Raymont-Peculiar.

*— was done during a junior high meet

Arkansas, however, turned out to be the winner in both divisions, taking the boys by a 373-332 margin, while Bentonville and Rogers dominated the girls side and gave Arkansas a 437-237 victory.

"You just have to compete against who shows up," said Bentonville boys coach Mike Power, whose team scored 189.5 points in the meet. "We went there and had a full team, and Rogers had a great team as well. We went up against a pair of solid Kansas City-area teams, and we saw some different people that we don't see in normal competition.

"We still got a lot of benefits out of that, and that's what we took out of it. We just had less people to compete against, which was a little disappointing, but it is what it is."

Power said he likes to plan out his meets in advance, so he didn't change his original strategy for the meet. The Tigers hardly get to run a sprint medley relay because it's not in the normal track meets, but the team of Colby Ried, Cole Joyce, Devin Dougherty and Coleman Wilson won the event in 3 minutes, 41.95 seconds.

Freshman Chas Nimrod also shined for Bentonville by picking up a victory in the triple jump, with his leap of 42 feet, 1 inch breaking the school's freshman record. Power said he also liked what he saw from Wilson, who also came back to win the 800 in 2:01.15, and Daniel Graham, who won the 1,600 in 4:31.30.

"Chas did well and performed multiple events in the meet," Power said. "Then athletes like Daniel Graham and Coleman Wilson, their race strategy worked out really well in preparation for the races coming up."

Parlin competes in Texas Relays

Bryant Parlin was one of the athletes Bentonville didn't send to Border Clash, but for a good reason. The senior headed to Austin, Texas, and competed in the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

"It was an awesome experience," Parlin said. "I got to see some really good competition that I don't get to see in Arkansas. The top throwers did really good, and I thought I did really good."

Parlin competed in the discus Friday and finished eighth out of 23 competitors, with his best toss of 166-3 being slightly off his season-best. He then threw the shot put Saturday and finished fourth out of 27 competitors with his best toss of 59-2.75, which came on his first throw, being slightly off the 62-10.75 he threw at the Tiger Relays.

"I think the nerves got me a little," Parlin said. "I'm not used to seeing that kind of competition, and I think it got into my head. I was thinking a little too much. Now that I have that out of the way, I'll be ready for upcoming big meets."

Where is Bentonville West?

A school that has been noticeably absent from recent area meets has been Bentonville West.

West's teams have been competing, but they have done so in Oklahoma. The Wolverines and Lady Wolverines competed at a meet in Claremore before spring break, then traveled Friday to Owasso and took part in the Ram Relays.

"Instead of running against the same people over and over, we decided to this in order to race against other schools and see different competition," West girls coach Todd Boddie said. "This adds a little variety to the season.

"It's no different running in Oklahoma meets than Arkansas meets. They run the same events, but now knowing who you are up against brings a different level of competition. Both are great track states."

West finished second to Tulsa Union in the boys division with 111 points as Brandon Humes gave the Wolverines a first-place finish in the long jump, going 20-8.25, while Sean Gouvion won the pole vault at 13-6. Teammate Welly Faddis finished second in the long jump, while Avery Francis took second in the 3,200 and Daniel Lestina did likewise in the 300 hurdles.

On the girls side, West finished third behind Union and Owasso with 82 points. The Lady Wolverines earned first-place finishes by Grace Posey in the 100 with a season-best 12.50 seconds, the 4x100 relay team with a time of 50.35 and freshman Rachel Wilson, who cleared 5 feet in the high jump a day after she cleared 5-3 in a junior high meet at Rogers Heritage.

"There were some really good teams there, and I thought our kids stepped things up a bit," Boddie said. "We competed in some warm weather, and I saw a lot of good things out there. I thought we did really well."

West isn't finished with its out-of-state competition just yet. Its teams will travel next week to the Jocks Nitch Relays in Pittsburg, Kan., and some athletes will compete the following week at the Kansas Relays.

Bulldogs victorious in Cabot

Freshman Isaiah Sategna won four events Tuesday and led Fayetteville's boys to the team title during the Walmart Cabot Invitational.

Sategna won the 200 meters with a season-best 22.77 seconds and took the triple jump with a leap of an area-best 23 feet, 7 inches. He then swept the hurdles titles, turning in times of 14.63 seconds in the 110s and 39.75 in the 300s.

The Bulldogs compiled 117.33 points while Conway took second at 96.33 points. Fayetteville also picked up firsts from Jack Williams in the 1,600 (4:35.01) and Ryan Roark in the pole vault (season-best 15-0).

Fayetteville also won the girls team title with 144 points as Conway took second with 126 and Cabot finished third at 109. The Lady Purple'Dogs won two of the four relay events as the team of Ashlyn Hall, Megan Hastings, Aiyanna Campbell and Kristen Gibbs took the 4x100 in 50.48 seconds, while Lauren Hill, Campbell, Kessiah Bemis and Mary Margaret Harris won the 4x400 in 4:11.68.
