Teen seriously injured in central Arkansas apartment shooting; suspect, 17, in custody

A 17-year-old is accused of shooting another 17-year-old in the back of the head, seriously injuring him, Friday morning at a suburban Little Rock apartment building.

The Maumelle Police Department said officers responded around 10 a.m. to the Gables of Maumelle Apartments at 700 Union Ct. on reports of gunfire.

Police spokesman Jim Hansard said the 17-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Medical crews brought him to the hospital where he remained Friday afternoon.

Police arrested a 17-year-old accused of shooting the other teen.

Authorities plan to charge the alleged shooter as an adult with first-degree battery, a felony carrying up to a 20-year prison sentence.

Hansard couldn’t confirm the victim’s medical condition Friday afternoon but said the teen’s injuries were serious.

Details about what led up to the shooting weren't immediately available.

Authorities haven’t released the name of the suspected shooter.

Police earlier interviewed several people around the apartment, just feet away from the Maumelle Police Department’s main building.

Police said the investigating into the shooting was ongoing.
