Puppy Bowl XV on Animal Planet
Puppy Bowl XV on Animal Planet

It's Super Bowl Sunday and many of us will be watching the biggest football game of the year, regardless of the recent hubbub surrounding who people think should really be playing today. There will be drama, pageantry and a whole lot of snacking going on.

But there are options for those who have no interest in the game, and they include cute little doggies. Starting at 2 p.m. today with the pre-game show, and airing off and on throughout the rest of the day, Animal Planet will be airing Puppy Bowl XV. This is the event's 15th year, and according to a channel news release, 100 percent of the puppies and kittens that have participated have been adopted.

This year a new set of adorable animals will take the field, and Team Ruff and Team Fluff will go nose to nose to win the "Lombarky" trophy.

To get this thing going, Animal Planet worked with more than 50 animal shelters and rescue organizations from more than 20 states and Costa Rica to get these puppies ready for the big game. Viewers will get an up-close look at the game through the water bowl cam, the kiss cam, aerial shots of the field from the sky box and touchdowns through cameras in the end zone.

Dan Schachner returns as "rufferee" for the eighth year in a row, and along with his assistant Shirley, a rescued sloth, will call the puppy penalties, fumbles and touchdowns. Team mascots are a trio of baby porcupines representing Team Ruff and a capybara that will represent Team Fluff. A group of baby kangaroos will act as cheerleaders, and there are three special-needs players -- Pippi, a blind Jack Russell mix; Bumble, a blind and deaf Australian Shepherd mix; and Will, a three-legged Doodle mix.

Midway through, the Kitty Half-Time Show will take place.
