NBC official join Walmart's board

Walmart Inc. has elected NBC executive Cesar Conde to its board of directors.

He will serve on the audit committee and the technology and e-commerce committee, according to documents filed last week with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

As part of his nonmanagement director compensation, Conde received 550 shares of Walmart common stock, the documents state. He also will receive a prorated portion of a $90,000 annual retainer.

Conde is the chairman of NBCUniversal International Group and NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. He also serves on PepsiCo's board. He is a trustee of the Aspen Institute and the Paley Center for Media, a member of the nonprofit Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders.

Before joining NBCUniversal in 2013, Conde was president of the Spanish-language television network Univision.

Walmart Board Chairman Greg Penner said in a news release Monday that Conde brings to the board "strong skills as a global executive and expertise in brand management, finance, digital and media."

Architect honored for park structures

Marlon Blackwell Architects of Fayetteville and James Corner Field Operations of New York have been named as winners of a 2019 Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects for their work on structures in a Memphis park.

The award is the highest national award given for architecture and design.

The two firms collaborated on the design of seven structures within the 195-acre Heart of the Park section of Shelby Farms Park in Memphis.

Marlon Blackwell holds the E. Fay Jones Chair in Architecture at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and is a distinguished professor in the Fay Jones School of Architecture.

"We used a holistic approach, both architecture and site design informing one another at the highest level," Blackwell said. "The award is indicative of the collaboration."

Shelby Farms Park is a 4,500-acre city park on the west side of Memphis. The park -- more than five times the size of Central Park in New York -- is located on the site of a former penal farm.

State index climbs 4.09, hits 413.00

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, rose 4.09 to 413.00 Monday.

"The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq limped higher on Monday in a volatile session as investors continue to watch ongoing U.S.-China trade talks, potential congressional gridlock and concerns over growth this year," said Chris Harkins, managing director with Raymond James & Associates in Little Rock.

Total volume for the index was 17.2 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
