Gene, gene, the changing machine

You just knew the story could get worse. And scarier.

After reports that at least one researcher on mainland China had edited genes in at least three babies--in order to make them disease-resistant or otherwise "better"--now The Wall Street Journal reports in a front-page story that other researchers have conducted similar experiments. And have lost contact with the patients.

Doctors will tell you they don't know what might happen to these patients, or their offspring, so anybody who has been altered in this way needs to be monitored. For years. In case turning off one gene turns on another. Or any number of could-bes or what-ifs.

According to the paper, "any changes in embryos are likely to pass onto future generations, meaning a tiny blip could have far-reaching consequences."

And now the patients are lost to Red China's vast population.

The ChiComs are good at keeping tabs on their population. Now would be one of the rare good times to use that ability.

And perhaps discourage more Dr. Moreaus among their scientists.
