Policy tweaked on public comments

The city has updated its policy on public comment during Board of Directors meetings, known as "citizen communication."

The new rules, which Mayor Frank Scott Jr. announced from the dais at the end of the board's organizational meeting Tuesday, require a person who wishes to speak to turn in a card before the start of the meeting and allow a person to speak more than once about the same topic.

Previously, people were not allowed to speak on a topic that had gone before the board before.

Each person who turns in a card is allowed three minutes to express a viewpoint, grievance or other message. A maximum of 30 minutes is allotted for public comment per meeting.

In an interview, Scott said he believed the changes enhanced transparency and order.

Meeting to feature plans for sidewalk

City employees will present plans for sidewalk construction on Marshall Street from Roosevelt Road to 33rd Street at a public meeting on Jan. 24.

The area is in Ward 1. The meeting will take place at the South End Neighborhood Resource Center at 110 W. 33rd St. and begins at 5:30 p.m.

Representatives from the civil engineering division of the Public Works Department will be there.
