SAU wins again

Southern Arkansas University had four players score 10 or more points Thursday in a 74-70 victory over the University of Arkansas at Monticello in Monticello.

The Boll Weevils led over the first 41/2 minutes of the game, but the Muleriders took the lead on an Aaron Lucas three-pointer with 15:32 left in the first half and built a 12-point lead over the next 8 minutes. UAM fought back to take a 31-29 lead with 4:12 left in the first half on a Kwame McBean basket, but a CJ Elkins three-pointer quickly gave the lead back to SAU.

The Muleriders led 42-36 at halftime, but the Boll Weevils tied the game at 54-54 with 11 minutes left on a Marcus Gilbert three-pointer. Keelin Jackson's dunk gave UAM a 61-54 lead with 8:39 remaining, but a Snyder Cenecharles three-pointer with 3:46 left gave SAU a 66-64 advantage. Cenecharles hit another three-pointer with 2:02 left to build a 72-65 lead and SAU held on for the victory.

DaVante Brooks led Southern Arkansas with 17 points, Jalen Brooks had 16, while Cenecharles and Elkins finished with 14 each. Jackson had 16 points to lead Arkansas-Monticello and KJ Lesure poured in 15.

In other state NCAA Division II men's games Thursday, Mike Fofana scored a game-high 19 points to lead Henderson State University (11-5, 6-4) to an 82-69 victory over Ouachita Baptist University (6-7, 3-6) in Arkadelphia. Chris Parker added 15 points for the Reddies, while Kendarious Smith led the Tigers with 15 points. ... Will Adler scored 20 points as Arkansas Tech University (4-11, 2-7) shot 48 percent from the floor to beat Harding University (5-10, 3-6) 86-72 in Searcy. JV Long scored a game-high 23 in the loss for Harding. ... Chris Crawford had 20 points and Tyler Williams added 13, but the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith (7-10, 1-4) fell to St. Edward's 76-65 at the Stubblefield Center in Fort Smith.

HSU women win at OBU

Hailey Estes scored a game-high 26 points, including eight three-pointers, as the Henderson State women (12-4, 7-3 Great American Conference) shot 43.8 percent from the floor in a 79-59 victory over Ouachita Baptist University on Thursday in Arkadelphia.

The Tigers (5-10, 3-6) shot 43.6 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Reddies 35-32, but Henderson State countered with a school-record 18 made three-pointers. The Reddies opened the game on a 9-0 run, including two three-pointers by Blu Jones, and were never seriously threatened.

Jones finished with 25 points, which included 7-of-14 shooting from the three-point line, and was the only other Henderson State player to score more than 10 points. Alivia Heull led Ouachita Baptist with 14 points, Eden Crow had 13 and Madison Brittain chipped in with 11.

In other state NCAA Division II women's games Thursday, a three-pointer by Kiara Moses with 0.2 seconds left gave Arkansas Tech University (6-9, 3-6) a 68-67 overtime victory over Harding (10-5, 5-4) in Searcy. The Golden Suns received a technical foul after the shot for having players leave the bench in celebration. Carissa Caples hit both technical free throws, but Harding's attempt at a tip-in on the final play fell short. ... MacKenzie Johnson scored a game-high 19 points for the University of Arkansas at Monticello (4-10, 3-6), but it wasn't enough as the Cotton Blossoms fell 62-56 to Southern Arkansas University (2-13, 1-8) in Monticello. ... Ellie Lehne scored a game-high 16 points and Tamera Gulley added 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith (5-11, 2-1 Heartland Conference) to a 60-51 victory over St. Edward's at the Stubblefield Center in Fort Smith.
