BASEBALL

UALR’s Fidel, Pittman named to SBC first team

University of Arkansas at Little Rock starting pitcher Chandler Fidel and designated hitter Riley Pittman were named to the Sun Belt Conference’s first team Monday.

Fidel, a junior, finished the regular season with a 5-4 record and a career-best 3.52 ERA. He leads the Sun Belt in innings pitched (942/3) and is third in the league in both ERA and strikeouts (96).

Pittman, a senior, leads the Trojans in batting average (.337), home runs (13), doubles (15) and RBI (51). He’s also the school’s career leader in home runs with 26.

UCA lands five on Southland teams

The University of Central Arkansas had five players named to the Southland Conference team.

Starting pitchers Cody Davenport and Noah Cameron were named to the Southland’s second team, while center fielder Josh Ragan was a third-team selection. Ragan and first baseman Tyler Smith were named to the All-Defensive team, and reliever Gavin Stone was an honorable mention selection.

Davenport is 6-4 with a 2.19 ERA in 94 2/3 innings and is second in the Southland in strikeouts with 82. Cameron (6-1, 2.53 ERA) leads UCA with 87 strikeouts.

RaganistheBears’leadinghitterwitha.290battingaverage, with team-highs of 56 hits, 16 doubles and 4 home runs. Smith is an All-Defensive selection for the second consecutive season. Stone has six saves and a 1.86 ERA in 18 appearances.

UCA (29-25, 19-10), the No. 2 seed in the Southland Tournament, faces No. 7 seed Northwestern (La.) State at noon Wednesday in Sugar Land, Texas.

BASKETBALL

UAPB names Brown women’s coach

TheUniversityofArkansasatPineBluffnamedDawnBrown as its new women’s coach in a news release Monday.

Brown has previous experience in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.TheJacksonStategraduatewasanassistantcoach at Prairie View A&M in 2010-16, and was the interim head coach at the school in 2013-14.

Last season, Brown was the associate head coach at Jacksonville University. She served as head coach at Division II Shorter University in 2017-18.

GOLF

Tsai leads NCAA D-II Tournament

Arkansas Tech University’s Shawn Tsai shot a 67 and leads by two strokes after the first round at the NCAA Division II national championship at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va.

Tsai’s 67 is a personal best and included six birdies.

As a team, the Wonder Boys turned in a 288, good for a tie for second place with Lincoln Memorial. Cal State Monterey Bay leads by one stroke. The top eight teams after three rounds will advance to match play.

Also for the Wonder Boys, Austin Green shot a 72 and is tied for 13th place. Andre Jacobs shot a 73 and is tied for 25th.
