CLAWS FOR A CAUSE

Drug prevention fundraiser to benefit Maumelle Police

Crawfish was not to be had. But crab legs, jumbo shrimp, sausage, potatoes, corn and beverages were on hand at the third annual Claws for Law Crab & Shrimp Boil. Hosted by former Razorback footballer Muskie Harris, the event took place May 16 at Lake Willastein Park in Maumelle.

Guests, a large number of whom were Maumelle police officers, paid for their choice of dinner offered in two sizes -- a "Little Maumelle," a pound, for $25; and a "Big Maumelle," a pound and a half, for $40. K. Hall & Sons and the Ben E. Keith Co. contributed the food. A planned eating challenge for media and law-enforcement agencies was canceled due to lack of personnel. But attendees had a good time anyway, dining at a park pavilion, listening to recorded music and perusing cars displayed by the Central Arkansas Corvette Club.

Proceeds benefited the Maumelle Police Department and its drug-prevention efforts in light of the opioid crisis. These efforts will include the lifesaving, anti-overdose drug Narcon, along with a drug take-back box where people can take their unwanted prescription medications for disposal. Also benefiting are the Maumelle High School Booster Club, Central Arkansas Boys and Girls Club Summer Refreshments Program and Muskie Harris Recovery Services.
