Where I live: Waterside II in Maumelle

Occupation: Retired retail/commercial interior designer

My favorite space is: our kitchen

Why? I love to cook. Developing recipes lets me be creative outside my other artistic endeavors ... but with more discipline. If I mess up one of my sculptures it's no big deal, but if the food isn't right, I'll have many outspoken critics.

When Virgeen and I designed our home, we made plenty of room for two cooks. The kitchen triangle is small, keeping movement between surfaces to a minimum. Having a large pot rack close by adds functionality. We never bump into each other. Although, that can be fun. "Alexa -- Play our song."

Our kitchen is the heart of our home. It has a large island with space for our boys and their friends. Our kitchen is the gathering place for holiday get-togethers and parties.

A large bay window looks out into the "wild" area of our backyard. The window really extends the kitchen onto the covered back porch. The sometimes serene, sometimes chaotic "wild" ecosystem attracts flora, fauna, furry and flying wildlife. The warmth and inclusiveness of our kitchen are why it is my favorite place.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: replace the stove and oven with a five-burner, commercial-type appliance.
