Church notes: Churches prepare for Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday

Washington County

First United Methodist Church in Springdale, 206 W. Johnson Ave., would like to invite the public to Ash Wednesday services at noon and 6 p.m. Feb. 26. The services are family friendly and come-as-you-are. The 12 p.m. service will be a shortened service to fit into a lunch break. There will be complementary coffee and drinks at both services.

Robinson Avenue Church of Christ in Springdale, 1506 W. Robinson Ave., invites the public to DivorceCare, one of the church's helping ministries. There will be sessions every Sunday from 4 to 5:45 p.m. starting March 1. Sessions are all taught by a video seminar and group discussion.

DivorceCare For Kids (DC4K) will meet at the same time Sundays starting March 1. This ministry is designed to help first- to sixth-graders heal from the pain of divorce through Bible-based lessons.

There is no charge to attend or for the materials. Babysitting will be provided for infants and little children.

St. James United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, 5 N. Willow Ave., celebrates Black History Month with the annual Soul Food Dinner from 3 to 5:30 p.m. today. The cost is $7 per plate, and all proceeds fund the church's historical restoration fund. All members, friends and family are invited to join in.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, 224 N. East Ave., hosts a Shrove Tuesday Festival at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 25. People of all ages are invited to a celebratory evening that will include a pancake supper, relay races, face-painting, photo booth, crafts, palm burning, entertainment and gumbo tasting.

Ash Wednesday service times are 7:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Feb. 26.

Choral Evensong is set for 5:30 p.m. March 1, when the St. Paul's Choir invites everyone for Evening Prayer in a choral setting.

Benton County

Bella Vista Community Church, 75 E. Lancashire Blvd., hosts Lenten soup suppers and meditations in McKay Hall each Wednesday Feb. 26 through April 1. Dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. Meditations begin at 6:20 p.m. Suggested donation is $3 per person or $5 per family.

Bella Vista Lutheran Church, 1990 Forest Hills Blvd., hosts an Inquirer's Class at 9:45 a.m. Sundays with Pastor Paul Hass. This is an opportunity for new members (or current members who want a refresher course) to learn about what it means to be a Lutheran and about Bella Vista Lutheran Church.

Ash Wednesday service begins at 6 p.m. Feb. 26. A supper will be served starting at 5:15 p.m.

At 11:30 a.m. March 3, there will be special worship service for those that are unable to attend a regular worship service. Following the service, a lunch will be served. Call the church office for transportation.

The Men's Bible study group meets on Mondays at 1 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in the church library. Please use the north entrance. The Quilters meet at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 26.

The Shepherd's Food pantry is open every Friday from 10 a.m. until noon. Along with food items, they are collecting Best Choice PVC labels that they can redeem for items needed in the food pantry. A container for donations is in the church narthex.

First United Methodist Church in Bella Vista, 20 Boyce Drive, begins a nine-week grief support class from 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 10 to share grief and seek healing. Grief is the outpouring of emotion and pain due to loss in our lives. The loss may be as a result of a death, of divorce, of sudden change, or any other of a variety of causes. The journey through grief is different for each circumstance and individual, but in grief support, participants share the journey together. The class will spend time understanding grief, the effects it has on us, and the mourning process that it is as a necessary journey which brings healing. The class provides insight, compassion, support and hope during this difficult time.

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Rogers, 824 W. Oak St., will celebrate Shrove Tuesday with a free pancake supper at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 25. This is the traditional day of feasting before the fasting days of Lent.

Ash Wednesday services with imposition of ashes will be at noon in English and 6 p.m. in both English and Spanish on Feb. 26.

Unitarian Universalists of Benton County, 1400 W. Walnut, No. 113, Rogers, will hear Jeff Tate speak on "Stages of Faith" at the 11 a.m. service Sunday. His talk is based on the book of that name by American theologian James W. Fowler.

United Lutheran Church of Bella Vista, 100 Cooper Road, hosts Ash Wednesday services at 12:15 and 7 p.m. Feb. 26. All are welcome.

The first Sunday of every month, one of the parish nurses can help you with a blood pressure reading, absolutely free. You can get your blood pressure checked from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. or from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m.

Village Bible Church in Bella Vista, 1591 Forest Hills Blvd., opens the Oasis Food Pantry from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 26. This ministry is available to anyone in the area who needs help with groceries and would appreciate the compassion and encouragement of friendly volunteers.

At 6:30 p.m., there will be singing, devotions and prayer in the Worship Center. Infant and toddler nursery for kids is offered as well, and the community is always warmly welcomed.

Christian Women's Connection will meet at 9 a.m. March 10 at Bella Vista Community Church, 75 E. Lancashire Blvd. The featured speaker will be Master Gardener Geri Hoerner. The guest speaker will be author B.J. Tassin of Bella Vista.

This brunch is held the second Tuesday of each month, and an all-American breakfast is served for $10. The program is sponsored by Stonecroft Ministries, and the public is invited.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, 2925 N. Old Missouri Road, hosts a Quakers rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 21 to benefit the Northwest Arkansas New Sanctuary Network.

Shoppers, volunteers and donations are needed. Drop off donations from 1 to 4 p.m. March 16-19 or 9 a.m. to noon March 20. Use the Rolling Hills Drive entrance.

Habitat for Humanity of Benton County hosts its second interfaith prayer breakfast to end homelessness on March 13. It is a time for religious leaders and public officials to join together to shed light on the poverty housing issue and work together toward a solution.

The event will take place at 7:30 a.m. March 13 at The House, 2323 W. Chestnut St., Rogers. Local restaurants including Onyx Coffee Lab, First Watch, Ozark Mountain Bagel Company and Daylight Donuts will provide breakfast and coffee.
