River cleanup set

Volunteers are needed for the 29th annual cleanup of the Mulberry River this Saturday.

Check in begins at 9 a.m. at Turner Bend. The day includes lunch, door prizes and a raffle for a new canoe.

Assistance is provided by the U.S. Forest Service, Keep Arkansas Beautiful, Steve Outlaw, Lost 40 Brewing and Green Source Recycling.

Talks focuses on Buffalo River

Dr. Brooks Blevins of Missouri State University will present the program "Battling for the Buffalo: Controlling the Fate of the Ozarks' Streams" from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at the Boone County Library, 221 W. Stephenson Ave. in Harrison.

The talk focuses on the Ozarks' national rivers from the point of view of landowners affected by the designation. Buffalo National River Partners is sponsoring the talk.

Hike teaches tree ID

A guided hike to learn how to identify trees during the winter is set for 1 to 4 p.m. March 7 in Bella Vista. Meet at the water tower parking area on Chelsea Road at Landon Drive.

The hike is 2.5 miles of moderate difficulty on dirt trails. Cris and Eleanor Jones, Northwest Arkansas master naturalists, will lead the hike.

Society sets photo contest

The Bella Vista Bluebird Society is hosting a photograph contest to mark the group's 40th anniversary.

It is open to everyone, not just society members. Contestants may submit up to four photographs, including two color and two black and white. Photos must show a bluebird, but other species may be in the picture.

First prize is a $50 Bluebird Shed gift card. Second is a $25 gift card and third is a hat or shirt from the bluebird society. Entry deadline is Sept. 14. More information is available at bvbluebirds.com.

Christmas trees recycled

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission sunk 150 Christmas trees at Lake Elmdale for fish habitat. The trees were sunk on Feb. 10.

Trees were submerged in large bundles of 30 trees per bundle to be most effective. The sites will be added soon to the fish attractors page on the agfc.com website.

Corps seeks park attendants

The Army Corps of Engineers is hiring park attendants at Beaver Lake for the 2020 visitor season.

Positions available include fee attendants, cleaning attendants and a combination of both fee and cleaning attendants. Park attendants are the primary point of contact for most campers and day users who visit Beaver Lake.

Expert anglers offer tips

A program and panel discussion about fishing at Beaver Lake will be at 2 p.m. March 29 at the Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area visitor center.

The event aims toward anglers who are new to fishing at Beaver Lake or new to fishing, but anyone interested in fishing is welcome.

Three experts will present tips. Bob Ross will discuss tactics for catching black bass. Tiffany Usrey will present tips for catching crappie. Tony Castro will offer advice for catching striped bass.
