Voters to decide on Sunday liquor sales

MOUNTAIN HOME -- Voters in Mountain Home will decide next week whether to allow off-premises sales of alcohol on Sundays, as more and more cities and counties consider the loosening of alcohol restrictions throughout Arkansas.

The measure to allow Sunday alcohol sales at grocery stores, gas stations and liquor stores is on Tuesday's ballot, The Baxter Bulletin reported.

Under a 2009 state law, municipalities can call citywide elections to decide whether off-premises alcohol sales can be permitted on Sundays.

Last week, the Mountain Home Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors approved a resolution in support of the measure.

"We saw it as a fairness issue. We have merchants that have products sitting on the shelf that they can't sell on Sundays just because they are in the city," Chamber President and CEO Jeff Pipkin said Monday. "Merchants in other cities can and do make those sales on Sundays, so it's really an unfair practice."

In Baxter County, the towns of Salesville and Norfork currently permit Sunday alcohol sales.
