Arkansas man, 24, killed in police shootout

An armed assailant who reportedly fired at officers was fatally shot by Atkins police Tuesday morning, according to a post on the department's Facebook page.

The Arkansas State Police agency later identified the deceased man as Anthony Langley Jr., 24, of Russellville. The agency is investigating the case.

According to Atkins police, an officer responded around 9:15 a.m. to a report of an armed person walking down Arkansas 105 near Avenue Three Southeast while "exhibiting aggressive behavior" and "pointing the weapon at passing motorists."

The officer "made contact" with the person "who immediately began firing at the officer," according to the post.

The shooter then ran into woods east of the highway, according to the post, and later was fatally shot while exchanging fire with officers.

No officers were injured.

Langley's body was taken to the state Crime Laboratory where a manner and cause of death will be determined, according to a state police press release.

Upon completion of the investigation, special agents of the state police Criminal Investigation Division, will submit the findings to the prosecuting attorney to determine if the use of deadly force was consistent with Arkansas law, the release said.
