Cuts affect 28 jobs, newspaper says

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Wednesday cut 28 jobs as part of a strategy to return to profitability in 2020, said Lynn Hamilton, the newspaper's president.

Hamilton announced the cuts in an email to employees.

The cuts came as the newspaper nears the completion of a transition to digital delivery in 63 of the state's 75 counties. The 12 counties served by the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette are not included.

A digital replica edition of the newspaper is now available seven days a week, and a printed edition is delivered to subscribers on Sundays. IPads have been offered to all subscribers in the 63 counties.

"This transition to digital delivery allows us to become profitable and sustains our ability to provide high quality local journalism into the foreseeable future," Hamilton said in the email.

No newsroom personnel were involved in the cuts, and readers will see no change in the daily editions of the newspaper, he said.

"We're sad to see co-workers and friends leave as a part of this necessary transition, and we're thankful for the contribution they've made to the Democrat-Gazette's past success, some of them for many, many years," Hamilton said.
