College to host conversation about activism

Minnijean Brown Trickey and Spirit Tawfiq will participate in a virtual public event to discuss activism, the University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College has announced.

Trickey is one of the Little Rock Nine, a group of Black students who enrolled at Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Until then, Central had no Black students. Trickey is an activist who works on several initiatives, including peacemaking, environmental issues, developing youth leadership, diversity education and training, cross-cultural communication and gender and social justice advocacy.

Tawfiq, one of her daughters, is an antiracism educator and founder of Roots of the Spirit, an organization created to uproot racism through storytelling, education and the arts.

Janis Kearney, a writer who was the former publisher of the Arkansas State Press and later presidential diarist to President Bill Clinton, will be the moderator.

The event, "Minnijean Brown and Spirit Tawfiq: A Legacy of Resistance: An Intergenerational Conversation about Activism," is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 4.

Admission is free. Registration in advance of the event is available at https://bit.ly/3o2SNhJ
