Club news: Jennifer Murray speaks on Gettysburg

Republicans

The Republican Party of Benton County will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 23 at the New Hope Assembly of God, 2626 W. New Hope Road in Rogers. The group meets the fourth Tuesday of every month.

MUFON

The Northwest Arkansas Mutual UFO Network will meet at 10 a.m. March 27 at the Arkansas Air and Military Museum in Fayetteville. Investigators and trainees will meet at 9:30 a.m. for investigator training.This meeting is being relocated this month to the museum due to construction at the Fayetteville Drake Field airport terminal.

The Retired Nurses of Northwest Arkansas will not meet on March 30, due to the meeting room being used to administer covid-19 vaccines. The next meeting will be June 29.

Civil War

The Bella Vista Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. April 1 at the Bella Vista Historical Museum, 1885 Bella Vista Way in Bella Vista. The program will be presented by Dr. Jennifer M. Murray of Stillwater, Okla., where she is a history professor at Oklahoma State University.

In addition to delivering hundreds of Civil War battlefield tours, she has led World War I and World War II study abroad trips to Europe. Murray's most recent publication is "On A Great Battlefield: The Making, Management, and Memory of Gettysburg National Military Park, 1933-2013," published by the University of Tennessee Press in 2014.

The history of the Gettysburg battlefield will be the subject of her presentation to the Roundtable.

She is also the author of "The Civil War Begins," published by the U.S. Army's Center of Military History in 2012. She is currently working on a full-length biography of George Gordon Meade, tentatively titled "Meade At War." Murray is a veteran faculty member at Gettysburg College's Civil War Institute and a coveted speaker at Civil War symposiums and roundtables. In addition she worked as a seasonal interpretive park ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park for nine summers, 2002-10.

Fayetteville Girl Scout Troops 5327 and 5713 recently replaced the weathered Arkansas state flag at the Fayetteville-Springdale Elks Lodge. The ceremony included reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
