Razorbacks sweep at SEC outdoor meet

The University of Arkansas women’s and men’s track and field teams swept titles Saturday night at the SEC Outdoor Championships in College Station, Texas.

Both Arkansas teams also won SEC triple crowns by winning conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track in the same school year.

The Razorbacks’ No. 2-ranked women’s team scored 127 points and won its 20th SEC title in the conference’s last 21 competitions in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field, including six of the last seven outdoors.

LSU’s women’s team was second with 120 1/2 points and Alabama was third with 116.

Arkansas’ men’s team won its first SEC outdoor title since 2016 with 129 points. Alabama was second with 109 points and LSU third with 108.

LSU took the lead in the women's race by scoring 26 points in the 400-meter hurdles — led by a 1-2 finish from Brittley Humphrey (56.14) and Milan Young (56.54) — to move into first place with 100 1/2 points through 17 of 21 event with Arkansas second with 95.

The Razorbacks regained the lead with 17 points in the 5,000 meters and held on to win by taking fourth in the 1,600 relay.

Arkansas junior Katie Izzo took second in the 5,000 in 15:46.06 and the Razorbacks also got points from sophomore Lauren Gregory (fourth in 15:56.55); senior Devin Clark (sixth in 16:03.00) and junior Krissy Gear (seventh in 16.05.71).

The Razorbacks clinched the title by taking fourth in the 1,600 relay in 3:29.28 with LSU fifth in 3:31.73.

Arkansas had three scorers in the 1,500 with senior Carina Viljoen taking fourth (4:18.34), junior Kennedy Thomson fifth (4:18.99) and freshman Isabel Van Camp sixth (4:19.13).

Freshman Daszay Freeman took third in the 100 hurdles (12.81) for the Razorbacks with sophomore Yoveinny Mota fourth (12.91) and freshman Jayla Hollis seventh (12.97).

Razorbacks senior Shafiqua Maloney took third in the 800 (2:05.56). Senior Jada Baylark was fourth in both the 100 (11.10) and 200 (22.69) and sophomore Tiana Wilson was fifth in the 200 (22.72) and seventh in the 400 (57.81).

The Razorbacks’ 400 relay of Mota, Baylark, Hollis and Wilson ran 43.81 to take third. Wilson also anchored the 1,600 relay.

Arkansas’ men’s team scored 29 points in the 5,000 meters to clinch the team victory.

Arkansas got a 1-2 finish from juniors Amon Kemboi winning in 13:52.98 and junior Emmanuel Cheboson second in 13:59.28.

On the track Kemboi out-sprinted Alabama’s Vincent Kiprop to win, but after the race Kiprop was disqualified for pushing Arkansas junior Meade, who then was moved up to third and ran 14:02.44. Also scoring in the 5,000 for the Razorbacks were senior Gilbert Boit (fifth in 14:05.27) and junior Matt Young (seventh in 14:12.29).

The Razorbacks capped the the meet by taking third in 1,600 relay in 3:04.96.

Arkansas senior Laquan Nairn took third in the triple jump (53-9 3/4).

Three Razorbacks scored in the 110 hurdles with freshman Phillip Lemonious fourth (13:32), sophomore Tre’Bien Gilbert fifth (13:48) and senior Carl Elliott sixth (13:52).

Junior Roman Turner was sixth in the 100 (10.12) for Arkansas. Senior Nick Hilson seventh in the 400 hurdles (51.69) and junior Jalen Brown seventh in the 200 (20.72).

The Razorbacks’ 400 relay of Turner, Kris Hari, Cade Clark and Brown ran 40.03 to take seventh.

Arkansas' men's team won their 20th SEC outdoor title and the women won their ninth. The men have won 16 SEC triple crowns and the women have won seven.
