APPALACHIAN ST. 2, UALR 1

UALR (19-25, 9-10 Sun Belt) scored its lone run on Kobe Barnum’s RBI single in the fifth inning as the Trojans were held to four hits in Friday’s loss to Appalachian State (17-27, 8-8) at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock. The Mountaineers took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI double by Luke Drumheller, who later scored on Kendall McGowan’s RBI single. Reliever Aaron Barkley (6-4) took the loss for UALR after giving up both Appalachian State runs with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in the 2 innings he worked. Tyler Tuthill (4-5) went the distance to get the win, allowing one walk with 11 strikeouts. The Trojans and Mountaineers will continue their series today at 6 p.m.

TROY 12, ARKANSAS STATE 4

Arkansas State University (16-26, 8-11 Sun Belt) held a 2-1 lead after two innings Friday in Troy, Ala., then fought to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth, but Troy (25-21, 11-8) took control with eight unanswered runs. Jared Toler, Ben Klutts and Jaylon Deshazier had two hits each to lead the Red Wolves. Sky-Lar Culver and Tyler Duncan had solo home runs for ASU, which finished wtih 11 hits and stranded nine base runners. Right-hander Brandon Hudson (4-2) took the loss after allowing 5 earned runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts over 5 innings. The Red Wolves and Trojans play again today at 3 p.m. Central.

SOUTHLAND

HOUSTON BAPTIST 7-6, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 1-8

The University of Central Arkansas (20-25, 15-19 Southland) struck out 15 times and was held to three hits in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader against Houston Baptist (11-35, 8-24), but the Bears used 15 hits in the second game to overcome six errors and earn a splt at Husky Field in Houston. UCA’s three hits in the first game came from AJ Mendolia, Taylor Daniell and Kolby Johnson. Daniell’s only hit was an RBI single through the left side in the fourth inning that cut Houston Baptist’s lead to 2-1, but the Huskies used two throwing errors, an RBI double from Brandon Bena and a two-run home run from Dawson Woods in the fifth to make it 6-1. UCA finished the game with five errors. The Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings of the second game before the Bears began their comeback. Mendolia and Johnson had RBI singles in the third inning, and Christian Brasher added an RBI single in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-3. Johnson hit a second RBI single in the fifth, and Benny Ayala — who finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored — added a two-run double to tie the game at 6-6. A failed pickoff attempt by Woods allowed Alonso Babiano to score in the seventh inning, and Brasher added his second RBI single to give the Bears the lead for good. Johnson was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI, while Brasher, Mendolia and Connor Emmet had two hits each. Mark Moyer (4-6) earned the victory after allowing 6 runs — 3 earned — on 8 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts over 6 innings. Tyler Cleveland got his ninth save of the season after allowing 1 hit with 1 strikeout over the final 2 innings. The Bears and Huskies will wrap up their series with another doubleheader today beginning at 11 a.m. Central.
