OPINION: Adolphine Fletcher Terry: A force to be reckoned with

posted: 03/18/2018 2:28 a.m. Discuss

My friend Pat Lile of Little Rock has asked me to write a nomination of the late Adolphine Fletcher Terry for inclusion in the Arkansas Women’s Hall of Fame. And, I always do whatever Pat Lile tells me to do. March is Women’s History Month. So Mrs. Terry it is.

After four years in Washington, D.C., as the bureau chief for the Arkansas Democrat, I moved back to Arkansas in late 1989. I needed to open a checking account.

DRIVETIME: U.S. 67/167 road work getting old

posted: 03/17/2018 4:30 a.m. Discuss

Dear Mahatma: Got a call from an Arkansas State University teacher who lives in Little Rock and commutes to Jonesboro. (Insert several exclamation points.) She's fed up with the construction work through Jacksonville that's been going on for years. I never see anybody working, and the cops don't patrol the area. She is scared to drive slow through there because people tailgate. How much longer? -- Old (and growing older) Friend.

Q There is an old someplace on my property in Beebe that contains hundreds of daffodils. I have a dear friend who wants some. Can they be moved now, or do I have to mark them and wait until November?

DEAR ABBY: Man uses security cameras to spy on stay-at-home wife

posted: 03/17/2018 1 a.m. Discuss

DEAR ABBY: I'm a stay-at-home mom with three children -- all in school. We recently had security cameras installed around our house. However, my husband has taken to using them to monitor everything I do throughout the day. He will say things like, "What took so long to go to the dry cleaner?" or, "Why did you go outside at 11 a.m.?" I feel like a prisoner in my home! What should I do? -- NO PRIVACY IN THE EAST

On Film: Thiedeman's short Alex to be shown with Park

posted: 03/16/2018 1:47 a.m. Discuss

I don't know if filmmaker Mark Thiedeman is familiar with Bob Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings," but his new 29-minute film Alex in the Morning put me in mind of that remarkable no-fault breakup song from 1964. Maybe it has something do with lead actor Harrison Trigg's woolly aimlessness, or the fact that the song and the film are about departure.

DEAR ABBY: Cancer diagnosis prompts search for life's lost love

posted: 03/16/2018 1 a.m. Discuss

DEAR ABBY: This is the 37th anniversary of when I met and fell in love with a beautiful young woman in Iowa. We were together less than a year before she decided to pursue her dreams in California. When she left, it broke my heart for years. To this day I still feel the loss.
