F. Thomas Moseley M.D., 85, Springfield, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, after a long illness. Born Sep. 17, 1924, in Camden, Ark., to Will and Mamie Moseley, Tom entered the University of Arkansas in 1942, where he served as president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. In 1944, he left the University and joined the US Army Medical Corps. After WWII, he finished his undergraduate degree, married Miriam Orr on Sept. 2, 1947, and entered the University of Arkansas School of Medicine. After graduating from medical school in 1951, he completed his general surgery residency program at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. Board certified in general surgery in 1957, Tom also earned a fellowship in the American College of Surgery. In 1956, the Moseleys moved to Springfield where he began his practice in general surgery. Tom relished his career as a surgeon for 35 years before retiring in 1991. During his tenure, he served as the chairman of the surgery department at St. John's Hospital. Tom loved the outdoors, especially hunting quail with his beloved bird dogs, overseeing the cattle on his Ozark farm, and fishing with his friends. He remained intensely loyal to the Arkansas Razorbacks, attending all home football games for many years until health forced him to give up his prized seats. He proudly served as the president of the Razorback Alumni of the Ozarks. He was direct and opinionated but thoroughly lovable to those who knew him best. He reserved his strongest pride and passion for his family about whom he talked to anyone who would listen! He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Miriam Ann Moseley; and by his brother, William Caldwell Moseley. Survivors include his wife of seven years, Ellen Plunkett Moseley; one son, F. Thomas "Tad" Moseley Jr. (Juliana); three daughters, Melissa Shantz (Joe), Melinda "Mindy" Miller (Steve) and Mary Kelley (Kevin); nine grandchildren, Wesley Pickering (Jody), Melanie Pickering Burnett (Ron), Clayton Pickering (Suzy), Lindsey Miller King (Brad), Jennifer Miller Talbert (Mark), John Miller, Kelly Miller, Anna Moseley and Emily Moseley. Tom was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Drew Pickering, Trenton King and Carter King, as well as three more great-grandchildren to be born soon. Tom is also survived by his sister, Marverine Moseley Rampy of Bella Vista, Ark.; his step-daughter, Suzanne Hall of Benton, Ark.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. at First & Calvary Presbyterian Church with Dr. Greg Seckman officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 2 from 6-8 p.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home-Brentwood Chapel.
