William "Bill" Melton Shumate

William "Bill" Melton Shumate, 90, of Conway, died Tuesday June 29 2010 at Hospice Home Care in Little Rock. He was born March 23, 1920 in Centerville (Faulkner County), to the late Stanley Shumate and Zella McNew Shumate. He received a Master's degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in Agriculture Education. He was a World War II Army veteran and taught school in Star City, Arkansas before becoming an agricultural Advisor with the Agency for International Development (USAID). He worked with colleges and universities in underdeveloped countries. His tours of service included Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Washington, D.C. and Nigeria, West Africa. He was a member of Cornerstone Bible Church. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margie Boles Shumate, two daughters, Jo Hirschy (Lewis) of Batesville, Judy Craig (Bill) of Little Rock, sister, Betty Pate (Bill) of Conway, brother, Royce Shumate (Glenna) of Greenbrier and sister-in-law, Billie Shumate of Missouri. Other survivors include four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Services are 10 a.m., Saturday in the chapel of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway with visitation from 9:30 to 10 a.m. There will be a private family burial at Crestlawn.
