Roy Samuel Southworth Jr.

Roy Samuel Southworth Jr., 77, of Ashland, Virginia was called home to Heaven October 16, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Samuel, Sr. and Gladys Butler Southworth. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Hilsdon Southworth; two daughters, Robin Shoemaker (Michael) and Kelly Kapolka (Gary); two grandsons, Samuel and Joseph Shoemaker. Roy was a long-time resident of Ashland, Virginia. He graduated in 1950 at the age of 17 from Henry Clay High School and immediately went into the Marines where he became a Sharp Shooter and a guard at the gun factory. He drove tractor trailers for Hennis Freightlines and Spector Red Ball and charter bus for Trailways. he then went into business for himself and established R.S. Southworth Hauling. His passions were his family, friends and the truck rodeos where he excelled in competition and won multiple trophies in all classes. Roy was awarded VA Grand Champion 6 times and placed first in the Naionals twice. Graveside services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the Hazen Cemetery in Hazen, Arkansas. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Ashland, 800 Thompson St., Ashland, Va. 23005, the Ashland Rescue Squad, or the Hanover County Animal Control, 12471 Taylor Complex Lane, Ashland, Va. 23005, to feed and care for all the puppies and kitties Roy loved so dearly, or the charity of your choice.
