Elizabeth "Tency" Linebarier Lawson Barnes (nee Burton), long-time Shreveport resident, passed away on Thursday, August 11 after complications from a stroke. A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 15 at 2 p.m. in Couch Chapel of First United Methodist Church of Shreveport followed by a private burial in Chidester, Arkansas. Tency was born on September 27, 1923 in Gibsland, Louisiana, and was raised in Camden, Arkansas, and Shreveport. She attended Byrd High School and Centenary College. She was graduated with a B.A. from Louisiana State University in 1944 and later earned her Master's degree there. A teacher for 25 years, Tency advised the newspapers at Woodlawn High School and Captain Shreve High School, and she was the English Department Head at Captain Shreve High School. She also taught in Arkansas and Texas. After retiring, Tency remained very active in the community, volunteering with The Mental Health Association of Caddo-Bossier and the Chi Omega sorority, to which she belonged for 60 years. She was also a member of several civic and social organizations including the Leornian Club, the Women's Department Club and Sigma Delta Chi. Barnes is survived by her daughter Myra Whitlock of Dallas; granddaughter Amanda Whitlock of San Diego; granddaughter Laura Longwell and her husband Lance of Philadelphia; and many dear extended family members and life-long friends. She was married to Otis Linebarier of Camden, Arkansas, for 11 years. Her husband of 35 years, David Lawson, preceded her in death.
