Dr. James Townsend, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather died suddenly Saturday, January 29, 2011, at Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Evansville, Ind. on September 9, 1936, to James Franklin and Elma Galloway Townsend. From that time forward he met a student nurse, Jean York, whom he married after her graduation from St. Mary's School of Nursing after he served in the United States Air Force. The family lived in Ames, Iowa for six years where Dr. Townsend received a PhD in physiology and entomology. His years of professional activity included teaching premedical students and serving as a research scientist. Those who knew him best would say he was friendly with a calm manner, and that he was a good neighbor. He was an excellent listener and could be an active participant in a conversation regarding any subject matter. He cannot be replaced, but his spirit for learning, and willingness to share will live on within the realm of family and friends.
