Maude Cain Crow Howe died on February 5, 2011 at the age of 98 leaving a great legacy of devotion and service to her family, her church and her community. She was born on March 14, 1912 to Joe and Ida Crow in West, Miss. Where she lived until she moved as a child with her family to Greenwood, Miss. She was graduated from Mississippi State College for Women with many awards honoring her beauty, character and intelligence. After graduation, she married Robert Howe of Helena, Ark, and they made their home and started their family in Stuttgart, Ark. where they entered significantly and enthusiastically into community and church life for 19 years before moving to Helena. Her life in Stuttgart and Helena included teaching and substitute teaching in the high schools and she is remembered by all her students with great admiration and affection. In both towns and through the area Maude Cain was well-known for her Bible studies and book reviews, giving presentations to many churches and civic clubs. She was a lifelong Presbyterian, contributing to every aspect and organization of the church, notably being the first woman to be elected to the office of Elder in the Helena church. Her vision failed in her later years but she avidly read books and magazines on tape which kept her informed on every relevant topic, including politics, current fiction and non-fiction and new ideas in religion, enabling her to participate in amazing depth in any discussion. The meaning of her friendships with, and influence on, people of all ages and all walks of life is immeasurable. Maude was predeceased by her parents, by her husband of 49 years, Bobby, who together with her left memories of love and devotion treasured by his family, and by an infant great-granddaughter, Catherine Cain Perry. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Campbell of Memphis, Peggy Webster and her husband Jimmy of Helena, and by her son Joe Howe and his wife Rena of Helena: six grandchildren survive her: Laurie Webster Perry (Steve) of North Little Rock, Nan Webster Connell (John) of Little Rock, Jamie Webster Deaton of Maumelle, Rob Campbell of Young Harris, GA, Caitlin Howe and Connor Howe of Helena: five great-grandchildren, Anna Perry, Amy Perry, Derek Deaton (Sarah), Karey Deaton and Mary Cate Connell and a great-great-grandson, Harper Cain Deaton. We thank Almighty God that we belonged to her and Bobby and that they belonged to us for these long and wonderful years. The family will gather privately for her burial at Maple Hill Cemetery, Helena, and invites all friends to join them in a memorial service of thanksgiving and praise at the First Presbyterian Church in Helena at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2011. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church. In lieu of flowers suggested memorials are: First Presbyterian Church of Helena, Phillips County Library, Phillips County Museum , Delta Humane Society and the Boys and Girls Club of Phillip County or another charity of choice.
