Mr. Glynn Hope "Poe" Carpenter, 87, of Booneville, died Monday, February 14, 2011. Mr. Carpenter was a native of Hamburg; a resident of Booneville for the past 14 years and a former resident of Forrest City and Mena for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. He began his electric utility career in 1946 in Hamburg with Mid-South Construction Company and later worked with an engineering firm in Hamburg and Hugo, Oklahoma. He worked for the Ashley Chicot Electric Cooperative in Hamburg for 11 years as a work order clerk, lineman, line foreman and power use advisor. His career took him to Rich Mountain Electric Cooperative in Mena where he served as general manager for eight years. He retired as president and chief executive officer of Woodruff Electric Cooperative at Forrest City, having served in that position from 1969 until 2003. Altogether, he worked for the electric cooperative system for nearly 53 years. Mr. Carpenter represented Arkansas on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's board of directors for 20 years and served on the Federal Rural Electric Insurance Exchange for 12 years. He was a director and former chairman of Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation and Arkansas Electric Cooperative, Inc. He was a past president of the Mena and Forrest City Chambers of Commerce, the Arkansas Rural Electrification Council, the Mena Lions Club, Forrest City Rotary Club, Booneville Kiwanis Club and Polk County Rural Development Council. He was a former board member of the Forrest City Memorial Hospital; Mena School Citizens Advisory Committee, Booneville Community Hospital, Booneville Chamber of Commerce and the Logan County Housing Authority. His last employment was with Century 21 Real Estate of Booneville. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, KCCH, a Master Mason of Booneville Blocher Lodge #247, a past Master Mason of the Promise Land Lodge, a member of Hamburg Lodge #465 and a member of the Booneville Order of the Eastern Star. He was a former Deacon of the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church in Hamburg, First Baptist Church of Forrest City, Landmark Baptist Church of Forrest City and Mena First Baptist Church. He was currently an active Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Booneville and he was involved in many other community activities. He is preceded in death by an infant son, Bobby; his parents, John & Lala Emory Carpenter; a brother, Quinton Carpenter and three sisters, Imogene White, Louise Thompson and Ruth Threlkeld. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mildred White Carpenter; a son, Billy Glynn Carpenter; a granddaughter, Kelly Jane Carpenter all of Booneville; three brothers, Oliver, James and Doyle Carpenter all of Hamburg and a sister, Nathalee Moore of Houston, Texas. Funeral services are 2 p.m., Friday at the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Promise Land Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Thursday.
