Gladys McNew Carden, 98, of Russellville, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 28, 1912, at Centerville, in Faulkner County, to E. L. and Ethel Blair McNew. She was a graduate of the Arkansas State Teachers College and taught school in several communities in Arkansas, including Vandale, Ashdown, Centerville and Russellville and worked at Arkansas Tech. Her teaching and concern for her students and friends were inspirational to all. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years and served as a leader for the Sunshine Gang Church Circle. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rollow Carden; and a sister, Bessie Henderson. Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Charlotte McNew of Conway; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Hettie Marie Harris of Rogers and Colleen and L. D. Owen of Russellville; and several nephews and nieces. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at First United Methodist Church Chapel with the Rev. Gail Baldwin officiating. Burial will be private in Oakland Cemetery under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Carden Sunday School Class. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday in the fellowship hall.
