JOHN ELMOND THOMAS JR., 70, of Sherwood was born Aug. 9, 1940 in North Little Rock, Ark. to the late John E. Thomas Sr. and Belton Staggs Thomas and passed away on Monday, Feb. 14, 2011. Mr. Thomas was an accomplished athlete and dancer having won numerous awards in Swimming, Judo, Weightlifting and Ballroom Dancing. He appeared on the original Dance Fever Television Show and was the star male lead dancer of Steve's Show for several years. He medaled as a power lifter for the United States in the Pan American Games in 1968. He was a long time teacher of ballroom dancing and also won first place awards in his division at the US Ballroom Championships and was very beloved by his many students. Mr. Thomas served his country in the Air National Guard and served as a photo technician during the Vietnam War. Leaving to cherish his memory are his children; Tami Thomas of North Little Rock, Toni Goodrich (Brad) of Greenbrier, Ark. and John E. Thomas III of Springfield, Mo.; grandchildren Jerry D. Reedy II of Sherwood, Terrel Wayne Reedy of Greenbrier and a great-granddaughter Carsyn L. Price. He is also survived by his friend and companion of 15 years Susan Robbins of Sherwood. A graveside funeral will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011 at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends during visitation at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home, 7724 Landers Road in North Little Rock on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. Please visit www.griffinleggettresthills.com to view the online tribute.
