Ruth Elizabeth Newkirk Slaughter

Ruth Elizabeth Newkirk Slaughter, of DeValls Bluff, passed away June 10, 2011. She was 95 years old. She was the daughter of Rueland and Zillah Dodson Newkirk. She was an active member of Hurricane Missionary Baptist Church for many years where she was a teacher and a church clerk until 2003 when she became ill and moved to Lonoke to be closer to her grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey Slaughter, an infant daughter Wanda Ferne Slaughter, son Calvin Edgar Slaughter, daughter Lois Jean Slaughter Staton, grandson David Staton, five brothers Ralph, Leslie, Ivan, half brother Roy, and sister Mary Newkirk Wheatley. She is survived by two grandsons Dennis Staton and wife Leslie of Lonoke, Danny Staton of Birmingham, Alabama, granddaughter Jeanie Williams of Kensett and granddaughter-in-law Gwen Staton of Carlisle. She was most proud of her 11 great-grandchildren, Katie, Stephen, Spencer, Tori, Madison, Reuben, Bailey, Shelby, Timothy, Sheldon and Sarah and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Hurricane Baptist Church, Roe. The visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Boyd Funeral Home, Lonoke. "Who can find a virtuous woman?
