Samuel Reo Flaherty

Samuel Reo Flaherty, passed away May 11, 2011. He was born in Blevins, Arkansas to Walter Flaherty and Beula Ursery Flaherty on October 23, 1917. Reo graduated from Blevins High School. He furthered his education by attending Henderson College in Arkadelphia where he received a B.A. degree. Later he went to Commerce, Texas and earned a master's degree. While in summer session at Henderson he met and married Venie Barton. They both taught school at Ashdown, Arkansas where he was principal for 10 years. Later they taught high school at Crossett, Arkansas for six years. They moved to Little Rock in 1958 where he taught math at Hall High School. Mr. Flaherty was active in St. Paul United Methodist Church until he became ill in 2003. Reo enjoyed gardening, traveling and fishing. He was a resident at Presbyterian Village for eight years Besides his wife, Venie, and his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jane Pennington; three sisters, Irene Linam, Winnie Sweat, and Doris McFarland and his brother, Felix Flaherty. Reo is survived by one sister, Willie Belle Hoover; a brother, Theo Flaherty; a son-in-law, John Pennington; three grandchildren, Amanda Prados, Andrew Pennington and Aaron Pennington; three great-grandchildren, Beau and Chase Prados and Brooks Pennington; his sister- in-law, Pauline "Polly" Johnson, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. The family extends thanks to the staff and caretakers for the care and kindness during the eight years he was at Presbyterian Village. Visitation will be at Ruebel Funeral Home on Friday, May 13, 2011 from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at St. Paul United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2223 Durwood Rd., Little Rock, Ark. 72207 or Presbyterian Village, 510 Brookside Dr., Little Rock, Ark. 72205.
